For engineers
- Skills worth learning in 2016: release engineering on Kubernetes (how rollouts fail, how to structure configuration, how to manage secrets safely), observability basics (metrics-first thinking, log correlation, and alerting hygiene), and access control fundamentals (namespaces, role modeling, least privilege).
- Skills starting to lose their advantage: treating Kubernetes as “a better Docker host.” Knowing kubectl flags is less valuable than understanding failure modes: scheduling constraints, resource pressure, DNS and networking behavior, and how to debug distributed systems under churn.
For platform teams
- New roles emerging: platform product owners (defining the paved road), cluster SREs (SLO-driven operations), and security engineers who work in the control plane (policy, audit, identity integration). There is also a growing need for “release managers” for platform components, not just applications.
- Operating model shift: the platform team becomes responsible for the shared substrate and its guardrails. The work is less about building infrastructure and more about managing change safely across many teams.
For companies running Kubernetes in production
Treat Kubernetes as a product with explicit reliability and security requirements:
- Budget for lifecycle (upgrades, deprecations, conformance): the cost is continuous, not a one-time migration.
- Decide where standardization is mandatory: networking, ingress, logging, and metrics are the usual candidates.
- Expect organizational friction: Kubernetes introduces a new boundary between app teams and platform teams. If you don’t define that boundary, it will be defined by incidents.
5) What is concerning or raises questions
Two themes are still underrepresented.
First, there are not enough detailed production failure stories. The ecosystem learns fastest from postmortems: control-plane overload, etcd corruption patterns, network outages, and upgrade incidents. Without that shared learning, organizations will rediscover the same failure modes with higher stakes.
Second, “cloud native” risks becoming a label that hides complexity. Adding more components (packaging tools, policy layers, telemetry systems) can solve real problems, but it can also create integration tax and operational coupling. The right question for 2017 is not “how many projects can we deploy?” but “how many can we operate with a small team and clear ownership?”
6) Short forecast: the next 1–2 years
In 2017–2018, these trends will likely push the ecosystem in predictable directions:
- More modular interfaces (runtime, storage, networking) to decouple innovation from Kubernetes core releases.
- Better defaults and conformance pressure as Kubernetes becomes enterprise infrastructure: fewer sharp edges, clearer upgrade paths, and stronger expectations for interoperability.
- A shift from “Kubernetes adoption” to “platform maturity” measured by upgrade cadence, incident rates, and the ability to support many teams safely.
KubeCon 2016 marks the moment where Kubernetes stops being a promising orchestrator and starts being judged as a production platform. That is a higher bar—and it’s the bar the ecosystem is now aiming for.
